Where things stood at the start of the day

Warsaw
The capital is surrounded and under daily bombing and shelling. Its water supply has been badly disrupted by damage to the waterworks and its radio is working on short wave.
The demarcation line
German and Soviet forces are moving to the line agreed between them, which runs along the Pissa, the Narew, the Vistula and the San.
Eastern Poland
Moscow says it holds Bialystok and Brest-Litovsk and that its forces are still moving west. The position of the remaining Polish forces in the east is unclear.
The Western Front
French and German troops are in contact in the Saar and the Haardt. There has been no general engagement.
At sea
Britain is stopping neutral shipping for contraband. German claims of Allied and neutral ships sunk have not been confirmed.
The neutrals
Twenty-one American republics are in conference at Panama. The United States Congress is sitting on whether to lift the arms embargo.
